When I hear someone talking about compost, I usually pass it by my ears. It is understandable: the complex science of creating humus is still the lot of summer residents. But recently, I looked at it from the other side. Compost is not only a hand-made fertilizer in the grandmother’s garden, but also a cool way to reduce the amount of garbage thrown away!
The main part of our garbage bag is organic, and if you turn it into compost, you can kill two birds with one stone: collect garbage separately (and therefore contribute to reducing garbage landfills), and make fertilizer, which can then be taken to the cottage or pour pots with indoor plants.
There are two ways to put compost technology into practice.
Compost in the country
It may look like a pen pad in the garden or a compost pit. You need to put or dig a hole in the remote (so that the smell does not spread) and the shady part (so that moisture does not evaporate). From time to time you need to water and mix the layers. This must be done for a reason: in this way we will provide the humidity and oxygen necessary for composting.
When laying layers, adhere to one principle: dry waste (the so-called “brown”, carbon-containing) – then wet (“green” containing nitrogen). This alternation of layers contributes to the necessary access of air, ventilation, accelerate the composting process. The main thing is that you should not compact the layers, this can interfere with the process.
Fashionable compost in the apartment
The second method proves that compost science has long ceased to be the prerogative of summer residents. On the contrary, it becomes a fashionable trend in Western families, and soon it may become popular with us. This is a room composter.
It looks like a tank container that can be ordered online. Outwardly, it resembles an ordinary bucket, but a miracle happens inside this bucket: the waste turns into land suitable for indoor plants.
It is most convenient to put such a tank in the kitchen, next to the sink. Then it will be possible to immediately throw away food waste during cooking. There will be no smell in the kitchen, because the tanks are equipped with special filters.
Home composters come in many forms. You can choose special cylindrical tanks, the organics of which are mixed using a special handle. You can stop the choice on electric tanks, which independently mix the contents after a certain period of time.
Vermicomposters became another know-how in compost science: tanks with special
California worms that are ready to process your waste without additional heating and absolutely free. Such vermicomposters are already installed even in Moscow schools, so it will not be difficult to monitor them at home. However, it is better to prepare in advance and read about the specifics of the worms: they cannot be fed with residues from citrus fruits, and it is better to cut the waste into small pieces.
